2/13/96 - Short-term supplemental oxygen may have a bad effect on circulation in CHF patients, cardiologists from Hershey and Lebanon, Pennsylvania, report in the February Journal of the American College of Cardiology. "Despite the frequent use of supplemental oxygen, there has been little investigation of its effects on people with heart failure," according to Dr. Lawrence Sinoway of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Sinoway's group studied the effects of supplemental oxygen use in 10 patients with Class 3 and Class 4 CHF. They found that supplemental oxygen in heart failure patients had a bad effect on cardiac output and other heart health measurements. Dr. Sinoway recommends that supplemental oxygen be used cautiously in patients with severe congestive heart failure. From: J Am Coll Cardiol 1996;27:353-357
